What is the reason for the growth of aerial roots in succulent plants and what to do

1. Soil drought

Reason: If the soil is dry for a long time, the leaves of succulents will shrive and lack water. If it is a rainy day with high humidity, the succulents will grow aerial roots to absorb moisture in the air to sustain life.

Solution: If succulent plants are short of water, they need to be watered in time, but they cannot be poured from top to bottom. It is best to use the immersion pot method to replenish water.

2. Soil compaction

Reason: If the soil is compacted and not breathable, water cannot be poured thoroughly, or there are cracks due to drought, the roots of succulents will not be able to breathe well and aerial roots will grow from the stems above ground.

Solution: If the soil of succulent plants becomes compacted, the potting soil should be replaced in time. The soil should be loose and breathable peat soil and perlite, mixed with at least 50% granular soil to plant succulents and increase soil permeability.

3. Soil is too wet

Reason: If the soil is too moist and you water too much, the roots of succulents will not be able to breathe properly and aerial roots will grow. If there is too much water, the roots of succulents may even rot.

Solution: When the succulents have too much water, stop watering and ventilate more. If you find signs of root rot in the succulents, dig them out in time, cut off the rotten roots, dry the roots, and then re-pot them in moist soil.

4. Note

The succulents that have just been planted have grown aerial roots during the acclimatization period. This is a normal phenomenon, indicating that the succulents are trying to adapt to the new environment. On the premise that succulents grow healthily, if the air humidity is high and the stems become woody, the succulents will also grow aerial roots and do not need to be worried about.
