When is the best time to plant peonies?

The peony is also called rabbit peony, bellflower, etc. The flowers are very special, with flower buds drooping and hanging on the branches, which is very beautiful. If you want to plant it, when is the best time to plant peony? Let’s learn more about it below.

When is the best time to plant peonies?

Peony is relatively cold-resistant. In many areas, it is planted in autumn, which is around October. After a winter of dormancy and a low-temperature vernalization phase in early spring, it will bloom in April or May. In addition, peonies can also be planted in spring, from February to March, and no later than March. In high-altitude areas, it can be planted a little later. In some warmer areas, peonies can be planted in February.

How to grow peony?

1. Soil

Peony can be planted in potted plants , which requires loose and well-drained soil. It can be made from 50% leaf mold or peat soil, 25% garden soil, and 25% sand. Place broken tiles at the bottom of the flowerpot and add an appropriate amount of bones, fish bones, etc. as base fertilizer to promote lush plants and produce more large and colorful flowers.

2. Transplantation

When using peony seedlings or planting tubers, you need a large and deep flowerpot. The planting should not be too shallow. The roots should be buried deeper and covered with more soil, about five centimeters of soil. When you first plant it, don't expose it to direct sunlight. First shade it and place it in a ventilated place. After a few days, you can put it outdoors in a sunny place and it will soon sprout new branches and leaves.

3. Lighting

The peony should be placed in a sunny place or on a south balcony to maintain sufficient light. If there is a lack of light, the branches and stems will grow tenderly and not be strong, which is not conducive to flowering.

4. Water and fertilizer

Peony is afraid of waterlogging. Even in well-drained soil, you don’t need to water it until the soil is dry. After it is completely dry, you need to water it thoroughly. Peony likes fertilizer more. During the growing season, you can apply a thin liquid compound fertilizer every ten days or so. You can stop fertilizing after the flower buds appear. Do not apply fertilizer during the summer and winter dormancy periods.

5. Temperature

The peony does not like high temperatures, but is very cold-resistant. The temperature between 15 and 25 degrees is suitable for the growth and flowering of the peony. It is difficult for the peony to bloom without experiencing the low temperature period in winter. Peony is particularly afraid of high temperatures. If the temperature exceeds 25 degrees, the flowering period is basically over.
