How to choose the medium for rice seedling cultivation? How to grow rice seedlings?

Now it is March, and rice seedling cultivation is about to begin in various places. In order to ensure that strong and high-quality seedlings can be cultivated and a bumper rice harvest can be achieved, rice seedling growers must pay attention. So how to choose the substrate for rice seedling cultivation? How to grow rice seedlings? Let’s learn more about it below.

How to choose the medium for rice seedling cultivation?

Generally, you can choose a seedling growing medium with uniform particles, appropriate moisture content and produced by a well-known company. At present, the rice seedling substrates commonly used in production can be roughly divided into two categories according to the source of raw materials: one is a mixture of natural biomass resources (such as peat or peat) as the main raw material; the other is a mixture of waste biomass resources (straw, mushroom bran, rice husks , etc.) that have been fermented, composted, and carbonized as the main raw material or with added raw materials.

How to grow rice seedlings?

1. Selection of rice fields

When selecting a nursery field, the soil must be fertile, moist, and well ventilated, and the field must be fertilized and leveled before sowing.

2. Seedling tray selection

It is recommended to use hard disks for growing seedlings, while small farmers can choose floppy disks for growing seedlings in large fields. Specifications: 9-inch plate: 58*28*2.5 cm, 7-inch plate: 58*22*2.5 cm. Prepare 20-24 9-inch trays and 28-32 7-inch trays per acre of field.

3. Seed treatment

Before sowing, seeds should be selected to remove the old seeds, and the seeds should be disinfected (using 25% prochloraz 2000-3000 times), soaked (6-8 hours for hybrid rice, 24-36 hours for conventional rice, with the standard being when the rice seeds have just broken through the breast and turned white), and germinated (dark germination, 2-3 days in high temperature period, 5-7 days in low temperature period) to increase the germination rate and seedling rate of the seeds.

4. Put it in a tray and water it

Put the seedling medium into the seedling tray, scrape it flat, and maintain a thickness of 1.8-2.2 cm. No vibration or pressure is needed. When packing the tray, fill it up all around and in the four corners. For bottom water, mix 65% dichlorodiphenyltrichloroethane and clean water at a ratio of 1:1000-1500. Water lightly and thoroughly until water seeps out of the bottom holes of the seedling tray.

5. Key points for sowing

Generally, the seed rate per mu of field is 2 kg, and the conventional japonica rice rate is 2.5-3 kg. In order to meet the requirements of mechanical planting, the sowing rate of machine-transplanted seedlings is relatively high. The sowing density should be checked after sowing. If the sowing on the tray is uneven, manual reseeding should be carried out in time. More seeds should be sown around and in the four corners of the seedling tray to strengthen the root system and facilitate the whole tray to remove the seedlings.

6. Rice field management

Finally, during the growth process of seedlings, reasonable irrigation, fertilization, weeding, and pest and disease control should be carried out.

In general, the selection of rice seedling substrate is very particular, and of course, more attention should be paid to the technology and methods of rice seedling cultivation in order to cultivate high-quality and strong seedlings. In production, strong seedlings can generally increase yield by about 10% compared to weak seedlings.
