How to propagate camellia by cuttings, the best time to propagate camellia by cuttings

How to propagate camellia by cuttings, the best time to propagate camellia by cuttings

1. Cutting time

The time for camellia cutting propagation should be chosen in late spring or early autumn, specifically from May to June and from September to October. During this period, the temperature, humidity and climate are suitable, which is conducive to rooting and later growth.

2. Handling cuttings

The cuttings should be selected from strong and semi-woody branches, and ensure that they are free of diseases and insect pests. After selecting, use scissors to cut it into 10 cm lengths, remove the lower leaves, and leave only two or three leaves on the upper ones. The bottom cut should be smooth, preferably beveled.

3. Prepare the soil

Cuttings have almost no requirements for the soil. Sand can be used directly as the soil, as long as it is loose and has good drainage properties. You can use a plastic pot or a ceramic pot, or just a disposable cup, but you can only put 1-2 roots in one cup.

4. Inserting the seeds into the soil

After preparing the potting soil, you can start cuttings. When inserting, use chopsticks to poke a few holes on the surface, with a spacing of 3-5 cm. Then insert the cuttings into the hole, about 3 cm deep, compact the surrounding soil, and water it thoroughly.

5. Maintenance after insertion

After cuttings, water thoroughly and then cover them with plastic film to keep them moist and warm. The temperature should be between 18-25 degrees, and the leaves should be sprayed with water frequently. It will take about a month for the plant to grow. Be careful not to rush to expose it to the sun. Wait until the roots have taken shape before gradually increasing the light.
