Which month is best for sowing okra?

Okra is known as the "king of vegetables ". It prefers warm environments and is extremely sensitive to frost. Therefore, okra sowing is usually scheduled in spring. In the south, the suitable sowing time is approximately from April to early June, while in the north, due to the colder climate, the sowing time will be slightly later, usually in late April to early May.

Which month is best for sowing okra?

Okra is grown in all parts of China, both north and south. In the south, the first sowing is usually carried out from April to early June, and the harvest period is from July to October. The second sowing is in August, and the harvest period can be extended to November. The sowing time in the north is a little later, generally from the end of April to the beginning of May. In areas with colder climates, seedlings are usually grown in greenhouses or sheds as early as March to avoid frost. The entire growth cycle of okra is about 120 days. By rationally planning the sowing time, you can ensure that the crop grows smoothly during the frost-free period.

What are the key points of okra planting?

Seed treatment and sowing? First, dry the okra seeds , select the plump and large seeds, and soak them in clean water for 12 hours. After that, wrap the seeds with wet cloth and place them in an environment of 25 to 30℃ for germination. Rinse with clean water once a day. After about three or four days, when more than 60% of the seeds have germinated, you can start sowing.

Land preparation and sowing? Before sowing, the planting site should be deeply plowed and sufficient base fertilizer should be applied, and higher and flat land should be selected. Use well-rotted farmyard manure, apply 5,000 kg per mu, and 20 kg of compound fertilizer , then dig trenches and make ridges with a ridge width of 200 cm, a maximum row spacing of 70 cm, and a minimum row spacing of 45 cm. Use the hole sowing method, water first and then sow, sow 3 to 4 seeds in each hole, and cover with about 2 cm of soil. If seedling transplanting is adopted, keep the soil temperature at around 25℃ after germination. Seedlings will emerge after four or five days and they will be transplanted after one month. Select healthy seedlings and plant two plants per hole.

Field management? After okra sprouts, water it once a week, and reduce the amount appropriately during the rainy season. Pay attention to drainage and timely weeding. Keep two healthy seedlings in each hole and remove weak and diseased seedlings. When the plant grows to 30 cm in height, apply urea at a rate of 6 to 7 kg per mu. In summer, pay attention to preventing lodging and remove old leaves and side branches in time to facilitate lighting and ventilation and reduce diseases and pests. The plant begins to bear fruit when it grows to 50 cm and has 7 to 9 true leaves. At this time, apply compound fertilizer at 50 to 60 kg per mu to increase yield. Note that okra has a long harvest period, which can last for two to three months.

In short, as a vegetable with high health value, okra currently has very good market prospects and demand, and many people grow it.
