How many days does it take for coriander to germinate?

Coriander is a common seasoning vegetable and is grown by many farmers. Generally, coriander is planted in spring and autumn. Spring sowing is generally from late March to mid-April, while autumn sowing is recommended from late August to mid-September. So how many days does it take for coriander to germinate? Let’s take a look with the editor below.

1. How many days does it take for coriander to germinate?

It usually takes 7 to 14 days for cilantro to germinate from sowing. The specific time will be affected by many factors, including seed treatment method, soil temperature, humidity, light and soil quality. The most suitable soil temperature for coriander seeds to germinate is 20 to 25°C. Within this temperature range, coriander seeds germinate relatively quickly and have a high germination rate. If the soil temperature is too low or too high, it may result in prolonged germination time or reduced germination rate.

If coriander seeds are sown directly into the soil without any treatment, the germination time may be relatively long, usually 17 to 18 days, or even up to 20 days. If the coriander seeds are pre-treated, such as soaking, rubbing open the seed shells, etc., the germination rate can be accelerated. Treated coriander seeds usually germinate within 7 to 14 days. Therefore, when growing coriander, ensuring suitable temperature and humidity conditions, as well as proper pretreatment of the seeds, are key factors in promoting rapid germination and emergence.

2. Coriander germination method

1. Choose high-quality seeds

Choose healthy, plump, pest-free coriander seeds. Avoid using old or damaged seeds, which have a lower germination rate.

2. Seed treatment

Gently rub the outer shells of coriander seeds to help the seeds absorb water and germinate. Soak the treated seeds in warm water, keeping the water temperature at around 30°C. The soaking time is generally 68 hours or longer. The water needs to be changed regularly during the soaking period to keep the water clean. After soaking, use a strainer to drain the seeds to prevent them from getting moldy due to excessive moisture.

3. Soil selection

Choose loose, fertile, well-drained soil for sowing. If the soil is compacted or too wet, it should be improved or drained.

4. Soil preparation

Before sowing, deep plow the soil and apply well-rotted organic fertilizer as base fertilizer. Level the soil surface to ensure even sowing.

5. Sowing method

Spread the treated coriander seeds evenly on the moist soil surface. The sowing depth is generally around 0.5-1 cm, not too deep or too shallow. Press the soil lightly so the seeds have good contact with the soil.

The above is an introduction to how many days it takes for coriander to germinate and emerge. For a period of time after sowing, the soil should be kept moist to promote water absorption and expansion of the seeds and germination of the embryo, but care should also be taken to avoid water accumulation that may cause seed rot.
