How to grow lavender in winter

How to grow lavender in winter

1. Stay warm

Lavender has a certain degree of cold resistance, but low temperatures will inhibit the growth of the plant and cause it to enter a dormant period. If you want it to develop better, you need to provide a warm environment. For some varieties that are not cold-resistant, they must be moved to a warm place indoors in winter to prevent the plants from being frostbitten. You can also put a bag on the top of the flower pot, which can also have a heat preservation effect.

2. Increase Lighting

Lavender itself is a light-loving plant, so it needs sunlight at all times, especially in winter. Adequate light is not only beneficial to the growth of the plants, but also can increase the temperature a little, helping the plants to survive the winter better. If it is raised indoors, it is generally placed on the balcony. If the wind is not strong, you can open the window for ventilation at noon.

3. Control watering

The growth of lavender slows down in winter and its demand for water is not great, so watering must be reduced in winter. If you water too much, the root respiration will be affected easily due to the slow evaporation rate, and there is also the possibility of freezing. In addition to the amount of water, you should also pay attention to the water temperature. Do not use cold water directly for watering. Generally, you should wait until the water reaches room temperature before watering.

4. Stop fertilizing

Lavender needs fertilizer during its growing season, but winter is its dormant period, so the demand for fertilizer is not great at this time. In order to prevent fertilizer accumulation and fertilizer damage, fertilizer is generally not applied in winter. If the indoor temperature is relatively warm, the plant can grow normally and you can also give it appropriate fertilizer. Fertilizer must be fully diluted before use, and appropriate watering should be done after fertilizing to help it absorb nutrients.
