How to grow the rubber tree well?

Known for its vigorous vitality, the Brazilian wood is also known as the fragrant dragon blood tree. Its leaves are emerald green and shiny, making it a popular ornamental plant. However, many friends do not know how to take care of the rubber tree. Let’s learn together how to take care of the rubber tree so that it grows well.

1. Lighting conditions

The rubber tree has a strong adaptability to light. It can tolerate direct sunlight and can also grow in a semi-shaded environment. The most suitable temperature range is 20-30℃. In spring, autumn and winter, it should be placed in a place with sufficient light but avoiding strong direct sunlight. In summer, about 50% of the sunlight needs to be blocked. Avoid placing it in a dark environment to prevent the leaves from losing their luster. Ensure that there is an appropriate amount of diffuse light every day so that the rubber tree can grow healthily.

2. Watering management

The rubber tree is drought-resistant but afraid of waterlogging. Watering should be moderate, avoid excessive or frequent watering to avoid root rot. Keep the soil slightly moist and avoid waterlogging. Water once a day in spring, summer and autumn, preferably in the morning in spring and autumn, and in the morning or evening in summer. During the vigorous growth period, if the leaves appear slightly wilted, water should be added in time. Maintaining 80% air humidity is conducive to its rapid growth.

3. Fertilization strategy

During the growing season (May to October), apply a small amount of organic fertilizer at the base of the plant or around the edge of the pot. After that, apply nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium compound fertilizer once every half a month or so, for 1 to 2 times in a row to promote the growth of branches and leaves. Fertilization should be stopped in winter. For varieties with gold or silver spots, apply more phosphorus and potassium fertilizers and less nitrogen fertilizers to prevent the plants from growing too tall and the leaves from turning green.

4. Pruning tips

During the growing seasons in spring and autumn, prune branches and leaves appropriately, remove dead parts, keep the plants beautiful, and reduce unnecessary nutrient consumption. Avoid pruning in summer to avoid damaging the plant. It grows slowly in winter and should not be pruned to avoid frostbite.

5. Soil selection

The Brazilian tree does not have high requirements for soil, but it is best to choose loose, breathable, well-drained and humus-rich acidic soil. You can use a mixture of coconut coir and river sand, and replace the potting soil every 2 to 3 years to keep the roots active.

Brazilian wood maintenance precautions:

1. Pay attention to the prevention and control of pests such as scale insects and red spiders, and spray corresponding pesticides when found.

2. The rubber tree is not cold-resistant. The temperature should be kept above 8-10℃ in winter and avoid being below 5℃ to prevent frost damage.

3. After pruning, apply appropriate fertilizer to supplement nutrients, spray the wound with carbendazim solution for disinfection, apply wood ash, and place it in a cool and ventilated place to promote wound healing.

The above is an introduction to the cultivation methods of the rubber tree. If you pay attention to these details, the rubber tree in your home can also grow well.
