The high temperature and high humidity in summer are conducive to the reproduction of various pathogens and parasites , many of which often cause posterior paralysis in pigs. So how to treat pig hind limb paralysis in summer? Let’s learn more about it below. 1. Swine Streptococcus disease There are four types of clinical symptoms of streptococcal disease: septicemia, meningitis, lymphadenopathy and arthritis. Among them, arthritis type is the most common in pig farms. Sick pigs often show swelling, pain, lameness, and even inability to stand in one or more limbs. Treatment measures: Arthritis-type streptococcal disease is often treated with drugs such as ceftiofur and amoxicillin. For sick pigs, 30,000-40,000 IU/kg of ampicillin or 40,000-50,000 IU/kg of penicillin can be used according to their body weight, and mixed evenly with an appropriate amount of metamizole or compound aminopyrine and used for intramuscular injection twice a day. 2. Haemophilus parasuis disease Haemophilus parasuis disease is also known as polyfibrinous serositis and arthritis. Symptoms on affected pig farms include swollen inflamed joints, weakness in the limbs, lameness, tremors (pain), ataxia, etc. Treatment measures: Antibiotics can be mixed into feed to treat the entire herd immediately, and sick pigs can be given large doses of antibiotics injected intramuscularly. Most serotypes of Haemophilus parasuis are sensitive to drugs such as florfenicol, tilmicosin, cephalosporins, gentamicin, spectinomycin, sulfonamides and quinolones. 3. Swine erysipelas Chronic cases of swine erysipelas mainly present as arthritis. Furthermore, arthritis can affect one or more joints, primarily the ankle, knee and wrist joints of the hind limbs of nursery pigs. Affected pigs have decreased appetite, general stiffness, lameness, and are unwilling to stand or unable to stand at all. Treatment measures: The first choice of treatment for this disease is penicillin, which has a fast effect. If the diseased pigs are acute, large doses of short-acting penicillin should be injected, 4-6 million units/head, twice a day for four days. If the disease is not acute, long-acting penicillin can be injected once every two days for three consecutive times. 4. Foot-and-mouth disease Swine foot-and-mouth disease is caused by the foot-and-mouth disease virus. Usually, ulcers, blisters, erosions, peeling, and separation or shedding of the hoof crown, fork, and heel of the sick pigs will appear, leading to lameness, pain when the pigs stand, and the pigs are afraid to stand. Treatment measures: When the disease occurs, you can use: Shiyinhuangtaibao + cephalosporin to control secondary bacterial infection. At the same time, mix the feed or drinking water: Qingwen Taibao + Multivitamin Taibao + Carbaspirin Calcium, which has the effects of antipyretic, analgesic and anti-inflammatory. It can also treat viral and secondary bacterial infections and improve the immunity of pigs. Generally speaking, summer is the peak season for diseases in pig farms, and there are many causes of pig hind limb paralysis. If you don’t understand the cause and use medication directly, some symptoms may not only fail to alleviate but may worsen, delaying the best treatment time for the pig disease. Therefore, when farmers carry out prevention and treatment, they must provide symptomatic treatment.
