Seabuckthorn propagation method, how to propagate seabuckthorn trees

1. Seed propagation

Sowing is a commonly used propagation method for sea buckthorn, which is divided into spring sowing and autumn sowing. Before this, it is usually necessary to soak the seeds first, which can increase the germination rate. Prepare loose and fertile soil, bury the seeds in it, and water them thoroughly to promote rooting and germination. In order to increase the germination rate, multiple seeds are often sown and thinned out after they grow.

2. Cutting propagation

Sea buckthorn cuttings are usually carried out in June. Select semi-lignified branches with a length of 7-10 cm, remove the leaves below, and make the cut flat. Soak its bottom in indolebutyric acid solution for 12-24 hours to promote rooting of the branches. If the degree of lignification is relatively low, the soaking time can be shortened. Then use peat and sand as the substrate, insert the cuttings on it, and then water it to keep it moist.

3. Grafting

Sea buckthorn grafting is usually carried out in March, and cleft grafting is often used. The rootstock is mostly the same as the rootstock, and the thickness of the scion should be similar to that of the rootstock, which makes it easier for the two to heal. The scion is generally made of 2-3 year old branches, which should be cut into 5 cm small sections and cut into wedge shape at the bottom. Insert it into the cut of the rootstock, make sure the two fit together, and then tie it with plastic tape.

4. Layering propagation

Sea buckthorn layering should be done before the buds sprout in early spring. Cut a two-year-old branch about 15 cm in length. Ring the base of the branch, then pull the branch down, bury the ringed area in the soil, and wait for it to take root and sprout. After it takes root, it can be separated from the mother plant.
