Cultivation methods and precautions of Kalanchoe in winter

Kalanchoe is a plant native to tropical regions and is suitable for growing in a sunny environment, but is not cold-resistant. In winter, due to the low temperature, it is difficult for Kalanchoe to grow well and it is prone to frostbite. Therefore, many people may not know how to care for Kalanchoe in winter. In fact, the key to caring for Kalanchoe in winter is to do a good job of insulation to ensure that the temperature of its growing environment is suitable. Let’s learn about the cultivation methods and precautions of Kalanchoe in winter.

1. Temperature management

Kalanchoe is not adapted to extreme cold, and the indoor temperature should be kept at 12 to 15 degrees Celsius in winter to promote its flowering and growth. Too low temperatures may cause delayed flowering and stunted growth. If the indoor temperature exceeds 24 degrees Celsius, it may also inhibit its growth and flowering. To ensure that the Kalanchoe continues to bloom, it is recommended to maintain the room temperature between 12 and 15 degrees Celsius. If the indoor temperature is too high, it can be adjusted by increasing humidity and proper ventilation.

2. Lighting requirements

Kalanchoe is sensitive to light and should be avoided from direct exposure to the sun. Provide diffuse light, ensuring at least 8 hours of light per day to promote flowering. However, the lighting time should not exceed 8 hours, so as not to affect the flowering period.

3. Watering Tips

To check soil moisture, press lightly with your fingers or insert a bamboo stick into the soil. If the soil is dry and whitish, it needs watering. When watering, water thoroughly, but avoid water accumulation and ensure good ventilation conditions. In winter, watering is best done at noon or in the afternoon to avoid soil unadaptation and freezing. During cold waves or continuous rainy days, avoid watering even if the soil is dry to prevent root rot.

4. Pruning and fertilizing

In order to maintain the round shape of Kalanchoe, reasonable pruning is necessary. If you want it to bloom in the same year, you should not prune it too late to avoid affecting the differentiation of flower buds. The growth and flowering of Kalanchoe have obvious seasonality, and it usually blooms in winter. After flowering, the plant will enter the vegetative growth stage, and at this time, phosphorus-rich flower-promoting fertilizers should be applied, such as potassium dihydrogen phosphate or Huaduoduo No. 2. After the flowers fade, the plant enters its peak growth period in the spring and should be fed with fertilizers mainly composed of nitrogen and potassium.

The above is an introduction to the key points of winter care for Kalanchoe. As a potted plant that many friends like, the key points of maintenance for Kalanchoe may be different in different seasons.
