How to water and fertilize azalea and how to take cuttings

How to water and fertilize azalea and how to take cuttings

1. Watering method

Rhododendron has certain requirements for water during its growth period, and the best state is when the soil is moist but without water accumulation. Generally speaking, water the plant every 2-3 days in spring and autumn, and every day in summer, and spray some water on the leaves. After entering winter, you should water less and don’t water unless the soil in the pot is dry. When watering, the water temperature should also be adjusted, as long as it is not too hot or too cold. During the rainy season, rain shelter and drainage are needed.

2. Fertilization method

In late winter and early spring, apply some basal fertilizer. In spring, from April to May, fertilization is required every 10-15 days, and you can use your own fermented fertilizer. After the summer begins, you can stop applying fertilizer and wait until the plant resumes growth in autumn. When applying fertilizer, avoid using concentrated fertilizer. Apply dilute fertilizer and do not apply fertilizer in winter.

3. Cutting method

1. Substrate: The substrate needs to be prepared before cutting. Mix 4 parts of horse manure, river sand and 2 parts of humus soil. The diameter of the flowerpot should not be too small and it should have good air permeability.

2. Branches: Cut a branch from the mother plant, it is better to use branches grown in the same year. Then remove the leaves at the bottom and keep 3 or 4 leaves on the top. After pruning, you need to dip it in liquid medicine, such as vitamin B12, rooting liquid, etc., and then dry it for later use.

3. Cutting: Insert the treated branches into the substrate 3-4cm, cover with soil and press firmly, and finally water thoroughly. After cuttings, you should cover it with a plastic bag to keep it moist, and then wait for it to slowly take root.
