When and how to prune southern grapes

When and how to prune southern grapes

1. Pruning time

For grapes in the south, it is recommended that the most appropriate pruning be done between 20 days after leaf fall and 15 days before bud break of the following year. The time of pruning must be controlled well, not too early or too late. Pruning too early will reduce its cold resistance and will be detrimental to wintering. Doing it too late can easily lead to sap flow, which will weaken the tree and be detrimental to germination. In addition, pay attention to the pruning method.

2. Pruning method

1. Short tip pruning: After pruning the branches of the current year, two or three buds should be left. Do not leave too many, nor should you leave any. Of course, it also depends on the variety. This method is suitable for European and American hybrid varieties, which can achieve better growth in the later stage.

2. Mid-tip pruning: retain four to seven buds after pruning. This pruning method is suitable for varieties with a high fruiting branch rate and medium growth potential, such as Victoria, Ruby, Red Globe, etc.

3. Long-shoot pruning: When pruning, leave eight to eleven buds on the current year's branches. This method is suitable for varieties with high flower buds, low fruiting branch rate and vigorous growth. Such as Kerry or beauty finger.

3. Notes

When pruning, be careful not to let the cut be too close to the bud eye, otherwise the cut will easily lose water and the bud eye will easily dry up and die. It is recommended to make the cut slightly above the middle of the two buds, or 2-4 cm away from the bud eye.
