When and how to plant watermelon

When and how to plant watermelon

1. When is the best time to plant watermelon?

Early-maturing watermelons can be planted in the spring of each year, which is around March. They will generally mature in June or July of the same summer. The planting time of mid-ripening watermelons will be relatively delayed and can be planted from April to June every year. As for late-ripening watermelon varieties, they are often planted in July every year.

If it is planted in a greenhouse, the temperature is easier to control, so the planting time can be a little more flexible. But it can generally be planted in late July or early August, so that it can be put on the market after National Day.

2. How to grow watermelon

Seed treatment: Before planting, soak the selected plump watermelon seeds in warm water at 55 degrees Celsius for about twelve hours. This will soften the seed coating and kill any pathogens at the seed level.

Germination treatment: After the seeds are processed, they must be germinated. Place it in a greenhouse and soak it in clean water for about four hours. Then wrap it with wet, tight gauze, place it in a container, and move it to a sunny place. During this process, remember to spray water every day to keep the gauze moist. In this way, the seeds will germinate in about a few days.

Planting in pots: Prepare a deeper flower pot and sandy loam with good drainage in advance. Apply some base fertilizer at the bottom of the flowerpot, fill it with soil, and water it thoroughly. Then you can transplant the germinated seeds into flower pots and water them with appropriate amount. After that, keep it warm and its seedlings will grow out soon.
