Fig winter management

Fig winter management

Figs are rich in nutrients and can be eaten directly or used as medicine. They have high planting benefits. The most important thing when planting figs is to choose varieties that are resistant to cold to ensure safe wintering. Below, I will introduce the wintering management of figs. Let’s take a look.

1. Pruning

The rapid growth of figs will weaken their cold resistance and make them easily frozen. It is recommended to prune in March and April and pinch off in July and August to improve the cold resistance of the fig itself.

2. Water and fertilizer management

Appropriate water and fertilizer can improve the fig's ability to resist cold. Water the plants well before winter and control the application of fertilizer to increase the lignification of branches and trunks.

3. Bury the soil

Prune the plants before they freeze in winter, cut off some unnecessary branches and leaves, and reduce nutrient consumption. Then bury the main trunk of the plant in the soil evenly and at a height of at least 10 cm. It is also necessary to check and replenish the cover regularly. Once winter is over and the soil thaws, remove the soil immediately and water it in time.

4. Twining branches

Preventing fig frost damage by winding the branches is also effective. The materials for winding branches can be newspapers, plastic film strips, tape, etc., combined with burying in the soil. The soil can be buried below 50cm, and the branches can be wound above 50cm, which will have a better effect in protecting against severe cold.

5. Binding protection

Before the winter temperatures drop, you can tie corn stalks, straw mats, rice straw and other objects to help figs safely overwinter. Be careful not to tie it too tightly and not too early. Do not untie it too early in the next year, between late March and early April.

6. Whitening

Applying quicklime water on the trunk of the fig can not only keep it warm, but also kill pests in the branches, so that the fruit tree will not be easily sick in the second year.

7. Package

For ground-planted figs, you can bundle the branches with woven bags or straw, or wrap them with non-woven fabrics, old clothes, etc., which can provide good heat preservation and moisturizing effects. For potted figs, they can be moved indoors. As long as the indoor temperature is around 5 degrees, the figs can survive the winter smoothly.

8. Strengthen tree management

The cold resistance of fig plants is related to the nutritional level of the plants. If the branches are full and store sufficient nutrients, the plant will have strong cold resistance, otherwise it will be weak. Fertilizer and water management during the growing period should be promoted in the early stage and controlled later, that is, ensure the supply of water and fertilizer in the early stage of growth to promote the healthy growth of spring shoots, and reasonably adjust the supply of water and fertilizer in the late stage of growth, cooperate with measures such as pinching and ring barking to avoid vigorous growth and insufficient growth of new shoots, moderate tree vigor, increase the tree's stored nutrition, and enhance the plant's ability to resist cold.

The above is an introduction to the wintering management of figs. Before winter comes, clean the area around the fig tree to reduce the breeding of diseases and pests. Farmers need to regularly loosen the soil and spray pesticides on fig trees to prevent the occurrence of diseases and pests.
