How to propagate cactus from cuttings

How to propagate cactus from cuttings

1. Cutting time

The time for cactus cuttings is very random, it can be done in spring, summer and autumn. If the indoor temperature is suitable, cuttings can also be carried out in winter. However, it is necessary to avoid cuttings during the rainy season as the humid environment is not conducive to their survival.

2. Pot soil preparation

Cactus does not have high requirements for soil, and can use river sand with good drainage. The soil is too sticky, which is not conducive to its rooting and breathing. If you want it to grow faster and better, you can use nutrient soil and add appropriate perlite. The soil must be disinfected before use to avoid any adverse effects on rooting.

3. Take cuttings

Choose old leaves that are 10 cm tall, plump and thick. Leaves that are too small and tender are difficult to root, which will affect the survival rate of cuttings. Do not plant the leaves immediately after cutting them. Let them dry for about 7 days and then cut them after the cut shrinks. Otherwise, they will easily rot. Insert the leaves 3 cm into the soil. Sandy soil does not need to be compacted too tightly, and do not water it immediately.

4. Seedling maintenance

During the seedling stage, cacti need to be placed in a well-ventilated place and given certain light. When new leaves grow on the top, you can try to lift the plant. If you can't lift it, it means it has taken root. Water immediately after rooting, but control the amount of water to avoid water accumulation.
