How many days does it take for coriander to germinate?

Coriander is a common seasoning vegetable and is often used as a garnish in cooking. Both its leaves and seeds are edible, have a unique aroma, are in high demand in the market, and have good planting prospects. So how many days does it take for coriander to germinate and produce seedlings? Let’s learn more about it below.

How many days does it take for coriander to germinate?

The germination time of coriander seeds is affected by many factors, including seed quality, soil environment, temperature, humidity and maintenance conditions. Under suitable conditions, it usually takes about 7 to 14 days for coriander seeds to germinate.

How to grow coriander so that it germinates quickly?

1. Seed selection

Choose fresh coriander seeds that are well mature, have full grains, a high germination rate, are free of mold and are shiny. In addition, the seed coat of coriander seeds is relatively hard, so the outer shell needs to be rubbed off before planting.

2. Seed soaking and germination

Soak the seeds in water at about 25°C for about 24 hours, then dry them slightly, and then place them in an environment of 20 to 25°C for germination. If planting in summer, due to the high temperature, the seeds need to be refrigerated for a period of time before sowing.

3. Soil preparation

Choose loose, fertile, well-drained soil, preferably purple soil with a lot of decomposed organic matter. Impurities such as sand and goose droppings can also be mixed into the soil to increase soil permeability and water retention.

4. Sow seeds at the right time

Coriander is suitable for sowing in spring and autumn. The spring sowing time is March-April, and the autumn sowing time is August-September. When sowing, you can use row sowing or broadcast sowing. When sowing in rows, dig furrows on the bed surface with a depth of 2-3 cm and a distance of 10-15 cm. Sprinkle the seeds evenly in the furrow and cover with 1-2 cm of soil. When sowing, spread the seeds evenly on the bed surface, then rake it lightly to make the seeds fully contact with the soil, and then cover with 1-2 cm of soil.

5. Sowing depth

The optimal sowing depth for coriander is 0.5-1 cm. Coriander has a shallow root system. If it is sown too deep, the soil permeability will deteriorate, making it difficult for the seeds to germinate. ‌

In general, under suitable conditions, coriander seeds will usually germinate in 7-14 days. Of course, some special measures can also be taken, such as seed treatment and management before and after sowing, which will help seed germination and growth.
