Garlic planting, cultivation and management technology

Garlic planting, cultivation and management technology

Garlic is not only a common vegetable and condiment , but also loved by people whether it is garlic sprouts, garlic scapes or garlic heads. Although garlic planting is not complicated, it does require certain planting and management skills to make it grow lushly and have large, round garlic bulbs. Let’s learn about the planting, cultivation and management techniques of garlic.

1. Prepare suitable soil

The growth and yield of any crop are closely related to soil quality. Garlic bulbs grow in the soil, so the soil needs to be loose, breathable, and rich in organic matter. If the soil becomes hard after watering, the growth of garlic will be affected. Therefore, when planting garlic, you should choose fertile soil and carry out deep plowing and fine harrowing before planting to create a suitable growth environment for garlic. This is the first step to increase yield.

2. Reasonable application of base fertilizer

The growth and yield of garlic depend on proper fertilization. Since garlic has shallow roots, the base fertilizer should be mainly organic fertilizer , but it must be ensured that the organic fertilizer has been fully fermented and decomposed. If there is insufficient organic fertilizer, you can add an appropriate amount of ternary compound fertilizer . Garlic will grow roots first and then sprout, and the roots will absorb nutrients from the soil. Only when the nutrients in garlic mother and the nutrients in the soil are combined can the garlic sprouts grow healthily. If there is a lack of nutrients in the soil, the garlic sprouts will grow weak relying solely on the nutrients in the garlic mother. Therefore, when planting garlic, sufficient base fertilizer should be applied.

3. Reasonable ground film covering

Covering the ground with mulch can increase soil temperature, speed up germination, promote greening in spring, and accelerate growth. Especially after the spring, since the temperature has not yet risen, the garlic covered with plastic film grows more robustly and the garlic bulbs are more likely to swell. Whether to cover the ground with mulch should be decided based on personal actual situation, but when covering the ground with mulch, attention should be paid to artificially assisted seedling emergence.

4. Topdressing at the right time

In addition to the base fertilizer during planting, garlic also requires top dressing. If the base fertilizer is applied sufficiently, top dressing is generally not required before the New Year. When the plants turn green again in the spring of the following year, you should apply fertilizer to promote seedling growth in time. Commonly used fertilizers are urea and human feces. Before garlic bolts, you can apply high-nitrogen compound fertilizer, or 70% urea combined with 30% potassium sulfate as topdressing, or you can use decomposed organic fertilizer for watering to promote the enlargement of garlic.

5. Pay attention to the prevention and control of diseases and pests

Common diseases and pests of garlic include ground maggots, leaf miners, rust and leaf blight. In daily management, we should pay attention to observation. Once we find signs of diseases and insect pests, we should take measures to prevent and control them immediately, and do not wait until the situation becomes serious. This will ensure healthy growth of the garlic.

To sum up, planting garlic is relatively simple. The above methods can be used as a reference when planting, but the specific methods should be based on local actual conditions and be adapted to local conditions.
