How to grow Christmas cactus in winter

How to grow Christmas cactus in winter

1. Adequate sunlight

Christmas cactus usually blooms in winter, so it must be given enough sunlight. The plant needs more than eight hours of sunlight every day so that the flower buds can differentiate and produce more beautiful flowers, and also avoid frostbite caused by low temperatures.

2. Keep warm and control temperature

Although it blooms in winter, it is not cold-resistant. When maintaining it, you need to provide a temperature environment between 20 and 25 degrees so that it can grow better. If the plant is not kept warm in winter, the flowering period will be shortened. The temperature in winter should be maintained between 10 and 15 degrees and not lower than 10 degrees.

3. Watering and fertilizing

Winter is its flowering time, not its dormancy period. Therefore, appropriate amount of watering and fertilization are needed at this time. When watering, it is better to keep the soil dry than wet. The amount of water should not be too large. It is best to keep the soil slightly moist. In addition, if the temperature is suitable, fertilizer should be applied to supplement nutrients. It is enough to fertilize once every half a month, using phosphorus and potassium fertilizers. However, if the environment is below 15 degrees, do not apply it.

4. Proper pruning

Normally it will continue to bloom and then wither in winter. During this period, timely pruning is required to cut off the dead flowers and weak flower buds, leaving only the plump and full ones. In addition, you can cut off the areas where the growth is too dense, which can save nutrients and is also beneficial for wintering.
