How many days does it take for onions to sprout?

Onion seeds, which are the seeds of green onions , can be used for sowing and propagation. You can usually plant the seeds you have saved yourself, or you can choose high-quality first-generation hybrid seeds from a seed company that has seed distribution qualifications. So how many days does it take for onion seeds to sprout? Let’s learn more about it below.

How many days does it take for onions to sprout?

The germination time of onions is affected by many factors, including seed variety, environmental conditions and planting methods . Generally speaking, the germination time of onions is about 5-10 days. However, if the seeds are soaked and germinated before sowing, the germination time can be shortened to 3-4 days.

How to sow onions so that they germinate quickly?

1. Seed selection

Choosing fresh, plump, and pest-free seeds is the basis for ensuring germination speed and germination rate.

2. Soak the seeds

Before sowing, you can soak the onion seeds in warm water for 24 hours, which will help speed up germination.

3. Germination method

(1) Potassium permanganate seed soaking method: Soak the seeds in 0.2% potassium permanganate solution for 20 to 30 minutes, then rinse them with clean water and then germinate them.

(2) Low temperature germination method: Mix the seeds with moist sand, put them in a fresh-keeping bag, and then put them in the refrigerator's cold storage layer, maintaining the temperature at 3-5°C. After a period of time, take them out for sowing.

(3) Germination with paper towel: Use paper towel to keep it moist, sprinkle the seeds on it, keep it moist, and it will germinate in about a week.

4. Sowing time

Choose spring and autumn for sowing, when the temperature is suitable and conducive to seed germination.

5. Seeding environment

(1) Temperature: The suitable temperature for onion germination is 15°C to 25°C, and the optimum temperature is around 20°C.

(2) Humidity: Keep the soil moist, but not too wet to prevent the seeds from rotting.

(3) Light: Onions do not require high light intensity. The light compensation point is 2500 lux and the saturation point is 25000 lux.

(4) Soil: Use loose, well-drained, organic-rich soil with a soil pH between 6.9-7.6, which is conducive to the growth of onions.

6. Sowing method

You can use row sowing, hole sowing or broadcast sowing. Water sufficiently before sowing, then spread the seeds evenly on the soil and cover with a thin layer of soil about 0.5-1 cm thick.

In general, the germination time of onions will be affected by many factors, but through germination treatment and correct planting methods, the germination time can be significantly shortened.
