How to prune hanging geraniums, how to top them, and when to prune them

How to prune hanging geraniums, how to top them, and when to prune them

1. How to trim

Hanging geraniums should be pruned at the end of summer. Diseased and withered leaves, weak branches and leaves, and flower branches that grow in the wrong direction should be pruned away to prevent them from affecting the development of new branches and leaves in autumn. When pruning geraniums, be especially careful not to cut the stem nodes. At the same time, prune in proportion to the height of the entire plant to ensure its beauty after pruning.

2. How to top

1. Time: Geranium can grow more new branches and leaves by topping. When the geranium seedlings grow 5-6 leaves, it is time to top them. The best time to fertilize adult geraniums is in spring or autumn.

2. Tools: Use scissors

3. Pruning: First, determine the ideal topping position for the geranium, looking for the position from top to bottom. It is best to top the main stem and side branches of the plant, with a height of about 4 cm. When topping the seedlings, you should be careful not to make them too long. Once you've determined the location, cut off the top of the geranium and place it in a cool, ventilated place.

4. Maintenance: Geraniums are fragile after topping. Remember not to place them in direct sunlight. To avoid infection of the incision, place them in a ventilated place until the incision recovers. Once the cut is dry, you can water and fertilize.

3. What is the pruning time?

Like upright geraniums, hanging geraniums need to go through a long summer dormancy period, so the best time to prune them is at the end of summer, when geraniums end their dormancy period and begin a new round of development. Pruning at this time can make geraniums grow better and more.
