How to take cuttings of Begonia

How to take cuttings of Begonia

There are generally two common methods for propagating crabapples by cuttings, namely water cuttings and substrate cuttings. The advantages of the water cuttings method are high survival rate and fast rooting, but the disadvantage is that the crabapples propagated by water cuttings are very prone to acclimatization after being transferred to soil cultivation, which can cause the roots of the crabapples to rot and die. Relatively speaking, the substrate cuttings method is easier to survive and is not too difficult to operate.

Begonia cutting time

The best time for crabapple cuttings is generally in spring and autumn, specifically in May-June and September-October. The temperature and air humidity at this time are very suitable for the growth of crabapple. Just place it in a suitable clean substrate and place it in a shaded place. It will take about 20 days for the crabapple to take root and survive. Cuttings can also be carried out in a greenhouse in winter.

Begonia cutting method

If you want to have a high survival rate for crabapple cuttings, you have to do a good job of processing the branches. First, you need to choose strong, disease-free one- or two-year-old branches as the mother plant. After removing excess leaves, cut the branches diagonally from the bottom, and cut the branches into sections of about 5-6 cm in length. It is best if each branch has 2 full buds. Then, after the cuttings are dried and cut, they can be used for cuttings. The survival rate will be very high.

Rooting of Begonia cuttings

The fastest way to root crabapple cuttings is to first prepare a well-breathable substrate. You can choose clean sandy soil. Secondly, use a wooden stick to poke holes about 4 cm apart when cutting. The depth should be one-half of the branch. Do not water immediately after cutting. Place in a cool place and it will take root in about a month.
