How to propagate Epiphyllum by cuttings

How to propagate Epiphyllum by cuttings

Epiphyllum is a plant belonging to the cactus family. Its flowers are very beautiful, but they bloom in the middle of the night and can only bloom for a few hours. This is the ephemeral nature of Epiphyllum. Its main way of reproduction is by cuttings, which are relatively easy. After the cuttings grow roots, a leaf stem will grow from the bottom, and this stem grows very fast.

Epiphyllum cutting time

The best time for cuttings of Epiphyllum is around April and May in spring, because its flowering period is around August and September each year. The temperature for cuttings at this time of spring is very suitable. Choose healthy and thicker stems and leaves as cuttings. Such branches can grow faster after cuttings.

Epiphyllum cutting method

The method of cutting Epiphyllum is to first choose some larger and thicker leaves. Epiphyllum is in the same family as cactus, so when choosing, you can choose according to the requirements of cactus. Cut off a leaf with sterilized scissors, apply a little fungicide on the cut end of the leaf, let it air dry, and then cut it into the potting soil after the wound is dry. After about a week, the cuttings of Epiphyllum leaves will take root and sprout.

Rooting of Epiphyllum cuttings

When Epiphyllum is propagated by cuttings, it grows relatively fast. Since it blooms at night, sunlight is actually not that important for it. It can be placed at home and bathed in scattered sunlight. Do not expose the Epiphyllum to direct sunlight, which will make its leaves thinner, shriveled, and then wither. Water it about once a week, and when fertilizing the Epiphyllum, use thin fertilizer. The application of fertilizer and water can allow the potting soil of the Epiphyllum potted plant to absorb it better, promoting the rooting and flowering of the Epiphyllum.
