How to graft a cherry tree

How to graft a cherry tree

Grafting cherry trees can make the trees bear fruit earlier and improve the taste of cherries. After grafting, the yield and quality of the fruits can be increased. Some cherry trees with weak disease resistance can be improved through grafting to improve their disease resistance and ability to prevent diseases and pests.

Cherry tree grafting time

Cherry trees can be grafted in three seasons: spring, summer and autumn. In spring, from March to April, cleft grafting, tongue grafting and single bud grafting are used. In summer, from June to August, chip bud grafting, close bud grafting and T-bud grafting are used. In autumn, from September to October, chip bud grafting or close bud grafting is used.

Cherry tree grafting technology

1. Single bud incision grafting

Cut a 2 cm thick bevel under the bud of the scion, cut it flat at a position where the rootstock is 5-8 cm above the ground, then cut an incision, insert the scion into the rootstock, and wrap it with a layer of film.

2. Single bud cutting

Leave a single bud on the scion and cut it into two surfaces. Cut it flat at a position 5-8 cm above the ground. After cutting it flat, cut straight down on one side of the wood to make a straight incision 3-3.5 cm long. Insert the long cut surface of the scion inward into the incision and wrap a layer of film around the bud eye.

3. Cleft grafting

Cut the scion into two slices, insert the thick slice into the rootstock, align the cambium of the rootstock and scion, and seal the bud with plastic wrap.
