Cultivation methods and precautions of octagonal wood

Star anise trees are relatively easy to grow. The lifespan of their leaves is generally 1-3 years. The leaves of young trees and vigorous trees have a longer lifespan, while the leaves of old trees and diseased and damaged trees have a shorter lifespan. Taking appropriate measures to protect leaves is of great significance to tree growth and increasing yield.

How to cultivate octagonal wood

The tree of octagon needs to be watered every 2 to 3 days. In summer and autumn, the leaves need to be sprayed with water. 50g of nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium compound fertilizer should be used once every 15 days. It needs to be exposed to light all day in spring, autumn and winter. On consecutive cloudy days, use a fill light for 2 hours a day. In summer, it is necessary to avoid light at noon and maintain it in a ventilated environment to prevent infection with anthrax.

1. Humidity:

Star anise likes to grow in a humid mountain climate environment and has high requirements for water. The annual rainfall requirement is generally 1000-2000 mm, and it must be evenly distributed. According to general records in various production areas, more than 80% of the rainfall is concentrated in May-September, and less in November-March, at no more than about 50 cm per month.

2. Terrain:

Topography has a great influence on the growth of star anise trees, because topography is directly related to sunshine, temperature, humidity, rainfall, soil physical and chemical properties and soil depth, these factors are closely related to the development of star anise trees. From a large topographical perspective, mountains with thousands of overlapping hills are the best places for star anise trees to grow, because it has the environmental conditions required for the growth of star anise, such as shade and humidity, low wind and little sunshine, which are not available in low mountains and plateaus.

3. Pruning:

Young star anise trees have strong apical dominance. After the young forest grows to 2-4 years, when it is generally 1.8-2 meters high, it should be topped to promote branching. Pruning and branch pulling should be used to make the branch structure reasonable. The upper and lower branches should be staggered and not overlapped to ensure good ventilation and light transmission of the tree. Its branches and leaves have a strong ability to sprout, so it is advisable to cut off some overgrown branches, diseased and insect-infested branches every winter to cultivate a high-yielding tree shape.

4. Soil:

The star anise tree likes to grow in loose, moist, well-ventilated soil. It will not grow well in dry or overly watery soil, poorly ventilated soil, or places with too shallow soil. Since the star anise tree bears fruit all year round and flowers for half a year, the soil must have sufficient nutrients and water. Sandy loam to clay loam with rich humus content, looseness, and good structure in the forest is best.

Matters Needing Attention in the Maintenance of Octagonal Wood

When caring for the star anise, you need to take care to prevent anthracnose. In daily maintenance, the maintenance environment needs to be ventilated frequently. Once the disease is found, the infected branches need to be cut off immediately and the whole plant should be sprayed with 400 times solution of 80% wettable powder of maneb. In the later stage, spray 1500 times solution of 50% benomyl once a week for one month.
