How many days does sorghum grow?

How many days does sorghum grow?

The growth process of sorghum, from planting to leaf growth, is not completed until 2-3 days before the primordial body of the ear begins to elongate, when the differentiation of all leaves is completed. After that, the number of leaves and nodes will no longer increase. The time from differentiation to appearance of each leaf of sorghum tends to be longer as the leaf position increases, but it is not balanced.

Sorghum growing season

The growing period of sorghum is about 130-140 days, and sorghum is generally sown from mid-March to late June each year. Pay attention to sowing late varieties early and early varieties late, but sorghum matures from early July to mid-October.

Sorghum Growing Conditions

1. Temperature: The suitable temperature for sorghum is 18~35℃, and the lowest temperature can reach 8~12℃. The temperature is high when sorghum seeds germinate and the seedlings are small, so care needs to be taken during maintenance.

2. Fertilizer and water: From the early stage of sorghum growth, phosphorus fertilizer has a significant effect on the growth and development process such as plant height, leaf emergence rate, leaf area, etc., and the moisture content in the soil should be 15%~20%. The water use in the seedling stage accounts for 8%~15% of the total water use during the entire growth period. The soil moisture content is best under the maximum water holding capacity conditions of 50%~65%.

3. Light: Insufficient light during the ear differentiation stage of sorghum has the greatest impact on the number of grains per ear. It can cause incomplete development of the young ears at the base, which has a great impact on subsequent growth.

Sorghum Growing Season Management

During the growing period of sorghum, attention should be paid to controlling water and fertilizer management. Around early October each year, fertilization should be stopped for those flower pots with appropriate water and fertilizer, and the amount of watering should be controlled every day to avoid root rot and withering.
