When is the right time to prune cherry tomatoes?

Cherry tomato pruning

In order to improve the photosynthesis of cherry tomatoes and promote the growth of seedlings, pruning is necessary. This can reduce nutrient consumption, help them grow and bloom better, and improve the quality and yield of the fruit.

Cherry Tomato Pruning Time

Cherry tomatoes can be pruned in spring. In the pruning technique, you must choose the right time. It is best to do it when the weather is clear and the air is relatively dry. Do not choose to prune during the rainy season or when the air humidity is high. It is easy to cause wound infection, which is not conducive to the growth of cherry tomatoes. Prune flexibly according to the situation during the growth period. Generally, the survival rate of cutting propagation is high in May.

How to prune cherry tomatoes

When pruning cherry tomatoes, you can keep a main trunk and strong side branches, cut off the remaining side branches, and wait until 5-6 clusters of fruits grow before you can do the first pinching. When pinching, be sure to keep 2 leaves at the bottom of the cluster. Then use the remaining side branches as the second main trunk and continue pinching and retaining branches.

After the cherry tomatoes on the first trunk are ripe and harvested, when the cherry tomatoes on the second trunk begin to swell, you should start to drop the vines, take the cherry tomatoes off the trellis, trim the dead and old leaves, and then hang the vines. Note that the plants to be re-hanged should be at the same height as the main trunk, and the plants in the back row should be higher than the plants in the front row in turn, so that they can receive sufficient light.

Precautions for pruning cherry tomatoes

When pruning cherry tomatoes, except for the selected main trunk and side branches, the remaining side branches can all be pruned away. When pruning, the wound should be as small as possible and the incision should be smooth. Pruning should not be too late and should be done before the branch grows to 12 cm.
