When is the best time to transplant cypress trees?

Cypress is relatively cold-resistant, and there is basically no problem for cypress to safely survive the winter in northern regions. However, this season is very cold, and transplanting in winter is generally not recommended. For warm regions in the south, transplanting in winter is completely possible.

Best time to transplant cypress trees

The best time to transplant cypress trees is in spring. In the south, spring comes early, so planting can be done in advance. In the north, the planting should be delayed a little, generally around mid-April. Although cypress trees are relatively cold-resistant, the survival rate of winter transplanting is not very high. This is determined by the biological growth characteristics of cypress species.

Best way to transplant cypress trees

1. Prepare the saplings

It is best to choose young cypress seedlings for transplanting. Such seedlings can adapt to the new environment as soon as possible after planting and can help survive. It is not advisable to choose adult seedlings. Cypress has more fibrous roots and a rich capillary root system. When digging cypress, try to keep the soil ball at the roots and dig more original soil.

2. Land preparation and pit digging

Choose a good location for planting cypress trees, prepare the soil in advance, plow and fine it, dig holes according to the diameter of the cypress seedlings, apply decomposed fertilizer at the bottom of the pit, and plant the cypress seedlings in the pits. However, the roots cannot be in contact with the fertilizer. When filling the soil for planting, lift the seedlings to encourage the roots to stretch.

Best post-transplant management for cypress trees

After the cypress seedlings are planted, the soil can be compacted and watered thoroughly at one time to help them take root. Then water them again after about a week. To prevent them from being blown down by strong winds, a support can be set up to stabilize the tree.
