When to transplant walnut trees

When to transplant walnut trees

Walnut trees are deciduous species and are the main nut trees in northern regions. The transplanting period has been widely recognized, but it is not suitable to transplant during the entire growing season. If walnut trees are transplanted during the growing season, the root system will be damaged and cannot absorb water and nutrients in time. The stems and leaves will not be lignified, which can easily cause the stems and leaves to dry up and the roots to die. Therefore, they cannot be transplanted at all times.

Walnut tree transplanting time

The best time to transplant walnut trees is spring and autumn, specifically April and May or August and September. It is easy for them to survive when the temperature is controlled above 15 degrees. The climate and temperature are suitable at this time, which can promote their rapid growth after transplanting.

Walnut tree transplanting method

Before transplanting walnut seedlings, you should cut off the injured and rotten roots, then soak them in water for about half a day, or dip the roots of the seedlings in mud to allow the root system to fully absorb water. This will ensure the survival and vigorous growth of the walnut seedlings. It is best to plant in a pit 1 meter deep, 1 meter wide, and 1 meter long. Apply decomposed farmyard manure mixed with a little phosphate fertilizer, then cover with a thin layer of soil, then put the walnut seedlings in and tamp down the surrounding area, then fill the soil until it is level with the ground, tamp everything down, and water it after tamp down. After the water has seeped in, loosen the soil with a hoe.

Management of walnut trees after transplanting

After the walnut tree is transplanted, the weather temperature is high, and it is a season with frequent diseases and insect pests. The branches and leaves affected by the disease need to be cut off in time and sprayed with pesticides. The branches and leaves eroded by pests need to be cut off and burned. Because they are still growing, they need sufficient nutrients. Fertilizer should be applied every ten to fifteen days, and a small amount of urea can also be added. Sufficient water is also needed for the growth and development of the roots. When the weather is hot, the water evaporates quickly, so water should be applied every one or two days to avoid excessive watering, which will cause waterlogging and rot of the roots.
