Suitable conditions for planting Chinese toon (planting techniques and management skills of Chinese toon)

Toona sinensis sprouts are rich in nutrients and have a unique flavor, and many people like to eat them. As people's demand for toona sinensis grows, the toona sinensis grown naturally in the wild can no longer meet the demand. We can solve this problem by planting toona sinensis artificially.

When planting Chinese toon, you should pay attention to various aspects of the work, including reproduction, seedling raising, planting, daily management, and harvesting. They are explained below in turn.

1. The propagation method of Chinese toon

There are two ways to propagate Chinese toon trees: one is through sowing and the other is through division.

1. Seed propagation is the propagation through toon seeds. Since the germination rate of toon seeds is not high, they need to be germinated before sowing.

Germination method: Soak the toon seeds in warm water at 30-35 degrees for 24 hours, and then place them in a constant temperature environment of 25 degrees for germination. When the seeds turn white, they can be sown when the temperature is above 5 degrees.

After emergence, thin out the seedlings when they have 2-3 true leaves, and transplant them when they have 4-5 true leaves. The spacing between rows and plants should be 25×15cm.

2. Division propagation is also called tillering propagation. It is to use the seedlings tillered from the toon tree and transplant them to the nursery ground. When the seedlings grow to about 2 meters, they are transplanted.

You can also use the root cutting and tillering method : in early spring, dig a circular ditch around the large toon tree, with a depth of about 60 cm.

Cut off some of the lateral roots of the Chinese toon tree and refill the soil to cover it. New seedlings will grow from the broken roots. You can transplant the seedlings every year and plant them out if the seedlings are successfully grown.

2. Toona sinensis planting and land preparation and fertilization

Before planting Chinese toon, the land should be prepared and fertilized. Before planting, sufficient base fertilizer must be applied, and the base fertilizer is mainly organic fertilizer. Generally, about 5,000 kg of decomposed organic fertilizer, 100 kg of superphosphate, and 25 kg of urea are applied per mu of land.

Fertilizer is spread on the surface, and then deep plowing is performed to mix the fertilizer thoroughly into the soil. After land preparation and fertilization, planting can be carried out.

There are two ways to cultivate Chinese toon, ordinary cultivation and dwarfing and dense planting. The two methods are the same in the seedling raising method, the difference is the planting density.

The spacing between rows and plants in ordinary cultivation is larger, with the fixed planting spacing being 7m×5m. The dwarf and dense planting has a high planting density and small spacing between rows and plants. Generally, the number of plants per acre is about 6,000.

Dwarf and densely planted trees can be divided into two types: multi-layer type and clumping type.

The characteristics of the multi-layer type are high trunks, layered distribution, and stable yields; the characteristics of the clumping type are short trunks and more main branches. Choosing different tree shapes requires different pruning methods after planting.

For multi-layer type, remove the top shoots when the seedlings are about 2 meters tall to promote the germination of side buds and form three layers of backbone branches. The first layer is 70cm from the ground, and the distance between the two layers above is 60cm and 40cm from bottom to top respectively.

For the clumping type, remove the top shoot when the plant is about 1m tall, and remove the top shoot when the side branches sprout 20-30cm.

3. Management after planting of Toona sinensis

Temperature Management

For a few days after transplanting, the temperature should be kept in a low temperature environment of 1-5 degrees to facilitate the growth of seedlings. One week after transplanting, increase the temperature appropriately to keep the temperature in the greenhouse at 18-24 degrees during the day and 12-14 degrees at night. After 40-50 days, the toon sprouts will grow.

Humidity Management

The humidity of the newly planted toon seedlings should be kept high. After planting, water them thoroughly and then irrigate them with small amounts of water. The air humidity should be kept at around 85%. After the new buds sprout, the air humidity should be kept at 75%.

Apply medicine to increase production

After the seedlings have been transplanted and have grown slowly, apply the drug to the 4-5 dormant buds on the top to make the buds full and strong, which can effectively increase the yield. Pay attention to the drug concentration, and apply 1g of the drug to about 100-120 buds.

Lighting Management

Chinese toon needs sufficient light to grow. To ensure sufficient light indoors, use drip-free film and keep the greenhouse film clean to reduce light refraction.

4. Harvesting Toona Sinensis Buds

Toona sinensis grown in a greenhouse can be harvested when the length of the toon shoots is 15-20cm in about 40-50 days under suitable temperature.

When harvesting the first batch of toon buds, the top buds on the bud stalks should be picked off. When picking the top buds, do not pick off all the bud stalks, keep some of them and let them continue to germinate.

After the first picking, harvesting can be done every 7-10 days, for a total of 4-5 times. Harvesting can be done in the morning and evening, and top dressing and watering should be done after each picking.
