Leaf cuttings of succulents are one of the most common propagation methods and also the most widely used method of succulent propagation. Of course, not all varieties can be propagated by leaf cuttings. Some varieties cannot be propagated by leaf cuttings, or the germination rate of leaf cuttings is extremely low. In this case, we can choose other propagation methods. How long does it take for the cuttings to take root?It takes more than half a month for the succulent leaves to take root under suitable temperature. It takes about 3 months for the mother leaves to dry up and fall off naturally, and grow into 3-5 cm seedlings that can grow independently. It takes careful care and patience to grow a succulent seedling from a leaf. Rooting is just the beginning. Only when it can be transplanted into different pots can the leaf cutting be considered successful. Of course, differences in variety, environment, and other factors will also affect the rooting time. ①Variety determines speedSome varieties of succulent leaves have a fast rooting and sprouting speed, such as Allen, Ji Longyue, White Peony, etc. The characteristics of these varieties determine that they have a high sprouting and rooting rate and a very fast sprouting speed . I have used Allen's leaf cuttings before, and the germination rate can reach almost 100%. And the speed is amazing, it sprouts within a week, and the growth rate after sprouting is also very fast . However, some varieties do not germinate very quickly, such as Cheese, Duvanri, Orange Monroe, etc. These varieties grow too slowly, so the germination rate of leaf cuttings is not only very low, but also very slow, and much slower, so you are too anxious to wait! This is the germination speed determined by the variety itself! ②Environment determines speedIn addition, the maintenance environment also affects the germination speed of leaf cuttings. The best temperature for leaf cuttings of succulents is 15-25 degrees, which is the most suitable temperature for rooting and germination of succulents . Therefore, we usually choose spring and autumn for leaf cuttings. The temperature in summer is too high, and some varieties will go dormant. Succulents in the dormant period will not root or grow. In addition to temperature, there are also light and ventilation. Leaf cuttings can be placed in a cool and ventilated place before they take root and sprout, which is conducive to the rooting of succulents and will also reduce the consumption of mother leaves after light. If the sun shines directly, the leaves may be sunburned. Even if the mother leaves are not sunburned, they will consume more quickly and dry out faster. ③Method determines speedIn fact, leaf-cut succulents can also be induced to take root in a humid environment first, and then transferred to soil cultivation. (1) Place the mature, healthy, and complete leaves of succulent plants in a soft, diffuse light environment to slightly dehydrate them, and then place them on a container of water covered with gauze. You can also use moist toilet paper. (2) When slightly dehydrated leaves encounter a humid environment, it will stimulate the roots to sprout quickly, shortening the rooting time to about 12 days. (3) Place the rooted leaves on the seedling soil like leaf cuttings and spray a small amount of water on them. The leaves will then grow normally like leaf cuttings grown in soil. The reason is very simple. The nutrients at the beginning of leaf cuttings taking root are provided by the mother leaves, so no soil is needed in the early stage of leaf cuttings. Slightly dehydrated leaves encounter a humid environment and quickly absorb water, stimulating the growing points, so the roots will grow quickly. People who often grow succulents will have this experience: the leaves that are accidentally knocked off and thrown into the corner will take root and sprout on their own. It is true that "flowers planted with care will not grow, but willows planted by accident will grow into shade"! Therefore, when you plant succulents with leaves, you don't need to be too meticulous, just pay attention to the appropriate temperature and humidity. As long as you are good at discovering, it is not difficult to make the leaves of succulents take root quickly! |
