How to care for and manage gardenia potted plants

First, planting soil

Gardenia likes acidic soil, rich in humus, loose, fertile, well-drained, and slightly fine-textured flower soil. It is a typical acidic plant . Leaves grown in alkaline soil are prone to yellowing.

For home cultivation of gardenia, you can use 4 parts of garden soil, 3 parts of humus soil, 2 parts of sand and 1 part of perlite. Before use, the prepared potting soil should be sterilized at high temperature. Use purple sand or ceramic pots for flower pots, which highlight air permeability and water permeability.

Second, the planting environment

Gardenia likes to have enough light, warm and humid growth environment, semi-shade, and slight sun exposure. It is cold-resistant . It is afraid of strong sunlight. In summer, field cultivation should be shaded by a pergola. Potted plants can be moved to a shaded place and maintained in a location with light in the afternoon or early morning .

When gardenia seeds are planted south of the Yangtze River in China, they can spend the winter outdoors. In the northern region, potted gardenias should be moved indoors and placed in a sunny, well-ventilated location after the temperature drops in late autumn and early winter.

Third: water supplement

Gardenia likes a humid growing environment. The soil in the flowerpot should be kept slightly moist on weekdays. It is suitable to use rainwater or fermented diluted rice water for watering .

If you use tap water, you need to dry it in the bucket for 1 to 2 days before using it. When watering, do not water unless the soil is dry, and water thoroughly when you do.

Summer is hot and autumn is dry. In addition to increasing the amount of watering, you also need to spray water around the pots and plant leaves to increase the humidity in the air to meet the plant growth requirements for air humidity and make the leaves more oily green and bright.

After flowering in August, control the amount of watering appropriately, reduce the amount of watering in winter, and keep the soil in the pot slightly dry. Spray the leaves in all seasons to replenish water and make the leaves smooth and clean.

Fourth, supplement nutrients

Gardenia likes fertilizer and has a great demand for nutrition. It needs to be top-dressed frequently during the growing season of the plant, and foliar fertilizer should be used every month .

When applying fertilizer on a daily basis, you can use organic fertilizer, such as fermented sheep dung balls, and bury them shallowly in the flower soil once a month. When applying fertilizer, remember to "apply thin fertilizers frequently."

Use 0.2% ferrous sulfate water or alum water to water the flower soil once a month. This can effectively prevent soil alkalinity, replenish iron in the soil, and prevent plant leaves from turning yellow.

Before the flowering period of gardenia, you can use " potassium dihydrogen phosphate " diluted with water 1500 times as foliar fertilizer. It can promote flowering and prolong the flowering period.

Fifth, pruning and shaping

Gardenia flowers have a strong ability to sprout and grow new branches. In order to prevent branches and leaves from overlapping, they should be pruned and shaped in time .

Prune and trim the overgrown branches, dense branches, and crossed branches. Make sure the branches in the crown do not block each other's light and hinder ventilation.

Gardenia can be pruned before buds form. When new branches grow 2 to 3 leaves, the first topping should be done to remove the complicated branches and leaves and promote the growth of side buds. This ensures that there are more flowering positions.
