When is the right time to plant chives?

Leeks can be planted in spring, summer, and autumn , but the best time is between March and May in spring . The climate is favorable for growth, leeks can germinate quickly, and management is easier. If the temperature can be well controlled, they can be planted in all seasons.

It is recommended to germinate the seeds before planting, soak them in warm water, and sow them after the radicles extend out. It can be done by broadcasting, covering them with thin soil, watering them appropriately, and covering them with plastic film to keep them warm and moist, so that the seeds will emerge soon.

Conditions for growing chives

temperature

Leeks are cold-resistant but not heat-resistant, and have a wide temperature adaptability range. The optimum temperature for leek germination is 15-18℃, and the optimum temperature for growth is 15--25℃ .

Its leaves can withstand low temperatures of -4-5℃. When the temperature drops to -6-7℃ or even -10℃, the leaves begin to wither, and the underground rhizomes can safely overwinter in the open field under the protection of the soil.

When the temperature exceeds 24℃, the plant grows slowly, the leaf fibers increase, the texture is rough and the quality is poor. Moreover, leek seedlings of a certain size need to feel low temperatures to differentiate flower buds through vernalization, and bolting and flowering require higher temperatures, which are generally the upper limit of the suitable temperature for growth.

illumination

The light intensity is medium, and it has the ability to tolerate weak light . Chives are relatively shade-tolerant, and leaf growth requires moderate light intensity. Both too strong and too weak light will affect the quality and yield of chives.

In addition, leek is a long-day plant . The plants that have undergone vernalization pass through the light stage under long-day conditions, and bolting, flowering and fruiting also require a longer number of daylight hours.

Moisture

The growth of leeks requires lower air humidity , generally 60%-70%, and higher soil humidity, generally 80%-95%. Therefore, sufficient water should be supplied during cultivation to keep the soil moist.
