Planting methods and management of potted cherry tomatoes Balcony cherry tomatoes planting time and technology

Nowadays, many people like to grow some vegetables and fruits at home. Cherry tomatoes are one of the more popular types. In recent years, growing vegetables on the balcony, especially growing cherry tomatoes, has been very popular.

Generally, it is best to use dwarf varieties for potted tomatoes, such as Nonghong No. 1. Potted tomatoes can be sown or planted, or you can buy some seedlings yourself. Compared with sowing, buying seedlings saves more time and has a higher survival rate.

Cherry tomato growing conditions

Cherry tomatoes are short-day plants , and they only need about 4-5 hours of sunlight a day. Insufficient light will lead to delayed differentiation of flower buds. The most suitable growth temperature is 20-25℃ , and the soil requirements are not very strict.

How to grow small tomatoes in pots

1. Preparation

Before sowing potted cherry tomatoes, you need to soak the seeds in warm water at 20-40℃ for a period of time, then place them on a wet paper towel to germinate , and wait for about a week for them to germinate . Be careful not to expose them to light during this period.

2. Choose a pot

A small tomato plant needs at least a two-gallon pot, a three-gallon pot or larger , and it will grow more fully, with more branches and leaves, a stronger plant, and more flowers and fruits.

3. Planting

When the potted tomatoes are just planted, they can be transplanted directly with soil, and some base fertilizer can be added to the bottom of the pot to ensure sufficient nutrients. Water them thoroughly once after planting . The daytime growth temperature should be above 18℃, and the light time should not be less than 6 hours.

Key points for managing potted cherry tomatoes

1. Water and fertilizer

The growth rate of potted cherry tomatoes is relatively fast after planting. At this time, you can water and fertilize them appropriately to keep the plants growing better. When watering, focus on ensuring that the soil is moist. Fertilizing needs to be done three months after the plants are planted.

During the fruit-bearing period, you can spray 0.3% potassium dihydrogen phosphate on the leaves once a week; if the plant lacks fertilizer, you can apply compound fertilizer, apply thin fertilizer frequently.

2. Artificial pollination

When pollinating, hold the plant gently and shake the stems with moderate force to encourage the pollen to successfully interact with each other.

3. Reasonable pruning

During the growth period of tomato seedlings, they should be pruned frequently and some branches between the branches and leaves should be pinched off to allow them to supply nutrients to the branches that bear flowers and fruits.

Because pruning cherry tomatoes can reduce unnecessary consumption of nutrients. Sometimes, if you don't have the heart to prune the plants, the so-called dead branches, yellow leaves, diseased branches, weak branches, etc. on the branches will continue to consume and lose nutrients in the body. Therefore, you can moderately trim the plant shape and remove those parts that are not growing well in time.
