Muskmelon planting technology and management methods Open-field melon cultivation management methods

Muskmelon is a type of melon, which is another name for melon. It is a thin-skinned melon . Muskmelon has a wide adaptability to the environment, so the planting techniques and management methods are not complicated. It is suitable for planting in both the north and the south, and the economic benefits are very high.

How and when to plant cantaloupe

1. Seed selection

There are many varieties of cantaloupe, and you can choose the appropriate variety according to market demand, environment and soil requirements. For example, suitable varieties in Yunnan include American zucchini, Crisp Jade No. 1, Black Beauty, etc.

2. Seed soaking

Soak the purchased seeds in 50℃ water and stir for five minutes. Stop stirring when the water temperature drops, soak for 4 hours, disinfect, soak the seeds in potassium permanganate for 20 minutes, remove and wash with clean water. Then place them in a cool place to drain, wrap them with a wet towel for germination, and keep the temperature at 28℃.

3. Soil

Muskmelon is suitable for planting in sandy soil with deep, fertile and good air permeability. Muskmelon is drought-resistant but not water-resistant. Drainage equipment should be prepared in advance to prevent waterlogging. Water the plants before raising seedlings to maintain soil moisture and apply organic fertilizer as base fertilizer.

4. Sowing time

Muskmelon likes a warm growing environment, is heat-resistant and afraid of cold. The temperature should be as high as 15 degrees . It can be sown in spring, from February to March . When the temperature is below 15 degrees, the melon will stop growing.

5. Seeding and maintenance

After sowing, cantaloupe can be covered with a 1 cm thin layer of soil for insulation. If planted in a greenhouse, the daytime temperature should be between 22 and 28 degrees, and the nighttime temperature should be above 8 degrees. If the night temperature is very low, it is necessary to cover it with non-woven fabric for insulation. Once the temperature drops, it will cause the seedlings to become stiff and grow slowly.

Melon cultivation management methods

1. Remove the top and pinch the heart

The fruiting of cantaloupe mainly depends on the sub-vines and grandson vines, so timely pinching and topping is the key to cantaloupe cultivation. Usually, when the main vine has 4-5 leaves, it is necessary to pinch the top and top in time to promote the growth of side vines.

2. Fertilization management

When the cantaloupe is planted, you can apply fertilizer 2-3 times. During the planting period, apply fertilizer according to the growth of the seedlings to prevent them from growing too tall. If the seedlings grow too vigorously on rainy days, you can spray some pesticides. Stop fertilizing when the cantaloupe is flowering and setting fruit.

3. Disease prevention and control

Diseases that need to be prevented for cantaloupe include downy mildew, powdery mildew, anthracnose, etc. When the melon grows 4 leaves, you can spray pesticides for prevention and control. You can use the biological agent polyoxin for prevention and control, or you can spray an appropriate amount of metalaxyl or methyl thiophanate.

4. Notes

When the cantaloupe has diseased and rotten leaves, they should be removed in time. When the cantaloupe is ripe, the water content should be controlled. Excessive watering will affect the quality of the cantaloupe. Do not leave water droplets on the top of the shed and wipe it dry in time. The cantaloupe will mature in about a month. Picking the cantaloupe early will affect the taste, sweetness, quality, etc.
