When is the best time to plant strawberries?

The best time to plant outdoor strawberries is usually from March to April each year, when the climate is warm and suitable for strawberry growth. From June to July, strawberries are ripe and ready to be picked. If you need to transplant the strawberries after picking them, you should choose the turn of summer and autumn, but no later than mid-August.

Before planting, you can choose to plant crops such as beans, wheat or melons, but you must ensure that strawberries are planted independently and avoid mixing with other crops. At the same time, weeds should be removed and sufficient base fertilizer should be applied.

Key points for growing strawberries

1. Choose a planting site

Soil requirements: Strawberries have strong adaptability to soil and can grow on ordinary land. They also have a certain degree of drought and waterlogging resistance.

Geographical location: Strawberries are best grown in areas with higher terrain and flat ground. The soil should be acidic, with a pH between 6.0 and 7.0, and receive full sun.

2. Planting method

Bed planting: This is the main method of growing open-air strawberries. The bed width is 60 to 70 cm, and the bed length is adjusted according to the terrain, generally 20 to 30 meters. Two rows are planted in the ridge, with a row spacing of 20 cm and a plant spacing of 12 cm. About 10,000 seedlings are planted per mu. There are three types of bed planting: flat bed, high bed and low bed, each with its own characteristics, such as saving labor, easy covering for cold protection and drainage of irrigation water.

Ridge planting: divided into large ridges and small ridges, the large ridge width is 80 cm, the small ridge width is 60 cm, and two rows or one row are planted respectively.

Strip planting: Land preparation is simple, with a single-row strip spacing of 60 to 70 cm and a plant spacing of about 20 cm; for double-row strips, two more rows are planted within the row, with a small row spacing of 20 to 30 cm and a plant spacing of about 20 cm. This method facilitates mechanized operation.

Best planting tips: Make sure the growing point of the strawberry seedling is parallel to the ground, with the roots deep in the soil and the tops of the new shoots above the soil. Water in time after planting to increase the survival rate.

3. Post-management

Fertilization: Ensure that the soil has sufficient nutrients and apply fertilizer in time, especially before winter, to meet the nutrient needs of strawberries for winter growth.

Top dressing: When most of the flower buds are formed, apply quick-acting fertilizer to promote strawberry absorption, ensure normal flowering and fruiting, and increase the fruit setting rate.

Pruning: Remove excess and dry leaves in time during the growing period to reduce nutrient loss and reduce the risk of diseases and pests.

The above is an introduction to the time and key points of strawberry planting. There are actually many ways to plant strawberries, both in greenhouses and in the open field.
