How to propagate Dracaena by cuttings? Cutting methods and precautions

Dracaena is also called the bleeding tree and the longevity plant. It is usually distributed in tropical regions such as Africa and southern Asia. The reproduction methods of Dracaena include layering propagation and cutting propagation. Cuttings are generally used for asexual reproduction .

Dragon Blood Tree Cutting Time

The time for cuttings of Dracaena should be between May and June every year . At this time, the temperature is relatively high, the Dracaena plants are in a stage of vigorous growth, and there is sufficient nutrient accumulation, so the survival rate after cuttings is relatively high.

Dracaena cutting method

1. Branch selection

The branches needed for Dracaena cuttings should be cut from mother plants in good growth condition, with a length of 20 to 30 cm. Pay attention to whether the cut branches are diseased. Diseased branches are not only difficult to survive but also cause contamination of the substrate of the breeding environment.

2. Preparation

After selecting the branches for cuttings, cut the bottom of the branches into an oblique mouth and rinse the bottom of the branches with clean water. Then put them in a cool and ventilated place to dry. Next, prepare a substrate mixed with plain sand and perlite and disinfect it in advance.

3. Cutting method

After disinfection, insert the branches into the soil 3 to 5 cm deep, and water them in time after the cuttings are completed. Then place them in a semi-shaded area without strong light and wait for them to grow new roots.

Rooting of Dracaena cuttings

If you want the dragon blood tree to take root quickly after cuttings, you need to pay attention to the maintenance after cuttings, often place the dragon blood tree in a sunny place, and fertilize it every once in a while. Make sure that the dragon blood tree has sufficient nutrients. If the pot soil is dry, water it immediately, but be careful not to let water accumulate in the pot.
