The best time to prune kumquat trees and how to prune them

Kumquat tree is also a kind of small fruit tree. It needs to be pruned regularly because pruning will make it grow more vigorously and help prevent the fruit from developing slowly or stopping growing due to lack of nutrition.

Pruning can also allow more branches and leaves to receive sufficient sunlight, avoiding chlorophyll deficiency due to insufficient photosynthesis, which causes the leaves to turn yellow and wither, and can increase the fruit-bearing rate of kumquats.

Kumquat tree pruning time

You can choose to prune the branches of kumquat trees in spring from February to mid-March , or in summer and autumn from early July to mid-August . In addition, you can tidy up the branches slightly between April and July . There is no need for drastic pruning. Just remove some of the flower branches to help it bloom and bear fruit faster.

How to prune kumquat trees

Kumquat trees only need to be pruned slightly when they are young. Generally, only overly dense branches, old and yellow branches, and branches attacked by pests and diseases are pruned. When kumquats enter the fruiting period, the outer edge of the crown, the old and useless branches that have lost their fruiting ability, can be pruned from the roots to restore the growth of the tree and avoid consuming too much nutrients.

Most of the long branches of kumquat trees grow on the main branches and have thorns, which will cover the normal growth of other branches. Therefore, except for those that must be left to fill the vacant crown, all branches should be cut off at the root, preferably in the bud stage. For the branches that have already borne fruit, dense and weak branches with fallen flowers should also be removed in time.
