Wood chrysanthemum pruning time

It is generally more appropriate to prune wood chrysanthemums in early spring and autumn. The temperature in these two time periods is more suitable, and the plants can resume growth as soon as possible after pruning. If it is done in summer or winter, it is very likely to cause the plants to lose a lot of water, resulting in the withering of their branches, flowers and leaves.

How to prune wood chrysanthemum

1. Infancy

When the wood chrysanthemum is young, it should be topped several times according to its growth to break the dominance of the top and promote the growth of side branches. This can effectively prevent the plant from growing too tall and also make the wood chrysanthemum bloom vigorously, enhancing its ornamental value.

2. Summer pruning

Wood chrysanthemum grows very strongly and can be properly thinned out in mid-June each year. This can be done after the plant is topped. Thin out the more branches growing on the main branches, leaving only 2-3 branches on each main branch to reduce nutrient consumption.

3. Pruning during flowering period

After the wood chrysanthemum buds appear, the side buds and axillary buds can be cut off, and only one bud on the top needs to be retained. When the flowering period is over, the remaining flowers and dead leaves should be cut off in time, and some diseased and insect-infested branches, weak branches, dead branches, and broken branches should also be cut off.

Tips for pruning wood chrysanthemum

When pruning wood chrysanthemums, you need to pay attention to the overall balance of the vegetation. In other words, do not tend to cut branches in only one direction, otherwise it will easily result in an effect where one side is heavy and the other side is light.
