The cutting method and time of asparagus fern. Simple cutting propagation method and precautions

Asparagus fern is a plant of the genus Asparagus in the Liliaceae family. It was originally distributed in South Africa and is now cultivated in China's northwest region, the Yangtze River Basin and areas to the south. Asparagus fern has extremely high appreciation value, can purify the air, and is also a Chinese medicinal material. There are three methods of propagating asparagus fern: division, cuttings and seed propagation, and cuttings are commonly used.

1. Cutting time

The best time to take cuttings of asparagus fern is from March to April each year. The climate is warm during this period, which is suitable for the growth of asparagus fern. It is not advisable to take cuttings in summer and winter. Too high or too low temperatures will cause asparagus fern to grow slowly and enter a dormant period, which is not conducive to the survival of the cuttings.

2. Cutting steps

Select cuttings: Choose a vigorously growing asparagus fern plant, select sturdy and well-growing branches, use sterilized scissors to cut 8-15 cm, including at least 2-3 stem points, apply carbendazim to disinfect the wound, soak it in rooting water for 5-10 minutes, and place it in a ventilated place to dry.

Choosing soil: You can choose loose, fertile nutrient soil. This kind of soil is loose and has good drainage, which is suitable for the growth of asparagus fern. Note that the soil must be disinfected in advance before use, which can reduce the occurrence of diseases.

Cutting: Use a tool to poke a few small holes in the prepared soil, then insert the branches of asparagus fern into the holes, press the soil tightly, and then spray it with water to keep the substrate slightly moist, and it will soon take root.

3. Maintenance

After the asparagus fern is grafted, it should be placed in a cool and sheltered place for maintenance. At this time, its roots are relatively fragile and cannot be exposed to strong light or excessively watered. If the temperature is appropriate, new roots will sprout in about 20 days and can be potted and planted after 1 month.
