How long does it take for onions to sprout?

Scallion seeds are generally sown around April in spring and September in autumn. Before planting, the seeds should be soaked in water to absorb moisture and sterilized. The soil required for planting must be loose and fertile. Sprinkle the seeds on the soil surface, cover with a thin layer of soil, and spray with water to keep them moist. Under proper management, they will generally germinate in about 10 days.

Green onion germination time

The germination time of green onions varies depending on the sowing season and climate: it takes about 9 to 13 days from sowing to germination in spring March and April; in autumn August and September, the seedlings will emerge about 8 days after sowing. When the temperature is maintained at around 18°C, the seeds will germinate faster, generally 6 to 8 days after sowing.

Management of green onion after emergence

1. Water appropriately

Before the onion seeds grow, the amount of watering must be controlled. Too much water can easily cause the seedlings to be covered with silt, which will hinder the onion seedlings from breaking through the soil. The first watering can only be done after the onion leaves grow up.

2. Regular weeding

After the onion seedlings grow out, they must be weeded in time to avoid competition among the seedlings and robbing the onion seedlings of the nutrients they need for growth. When the onion seedlings grow to about two centimeters, pesticides must be used to avoid the occurrence of some insect pests and fungal diseases.

3. Apply fertilizer in time

When the green onion starts to grow rapidly, be sure to add soil and fertilizer in time. The soil should be between 70-80 cm and should not cover the heart leaves of the green onion to avoid suppressing its growth.
