Burdock Planting and Harvesting Times

Burdock Planting Time

Burdock likes warm and humid environment, and has strong resistance to cold and heat. Seed germination and growth require a temperature of 20-25 degrees and strong light. It is sown and cultivated in early March in spring and before November in autumn in the southern region, and planted before May in spring in the northern region, and sown in September in autumn.

Burdock Harvest Time

The harvest period of burdock is very long. Generally, those sown in spring can be harvested from early June to early next year, and those sown in autumn can be harvested from early December to early April of next year.

Key points for high-yield cultivation of burdock

1. Select the site and apply fertilizer

Burdock is a deep-rooted vegetable. It requires cultivation in neutral sandy loam with deep, fertile soil, loose texture and good drainage. The land should be plowed more than 30 centimeters deep and made into high ridges 2-3 meters wide. 1500-2000 kg of decomposed farmyard manure should be applied per mu as base fertilizer.

2. Seed treatment

Select burdock seeds with full grains and no diseases or insect pests. Place the seeds in a sunny place for 1-2 days. Then prepare warm water at 40-50℃ and soak them in it for 1-2 hours. Take them out and dry them before preparing for sowing.

3. Sowing

Burdock can be sown in rows or holes. For row sowing, you need to dig trenches and evenly spread the seeds in the trenches. For hole sowing, you need to pay attention to the sowing density. Put 4-6 seeds in each hole, then cover it with 2-3 cm of soil, press it lightly, and cover it with a layer of grass to keep it moist. Wait until it sprouts, remove the grass and prepare for thinning.

4. Field management

Burdock seedlings need to be thinned out after they emerge. Usually, when the seedlings have 2-3 true leaves, thinning should be done at a distance of 10 cm. When they have 5-8 leaves, the seedlings should be fixed at a distance of about 25 cm. Once weeds are found, they should be pulled out as soon as possible to reduce nutrient consumption.
