How to deal with hydrangea after it blooms

Treatment after hydrangea blooms

1. Pruning time : After hydrangea blooms, it is generally necessary to prune it around the end of August each year, and try not to exceed September at the latest, otherwise the flower buds will be touched, which may affect the blooming of the hydrangea in the second year.

2. Pruning intensity In the northern region, you can prune hydrangeas heavily in autumn, leaving two pairs of leaves on its branches, and cut off its remaining flowers and branches under the flowers in time, which can also be used for cuttings to grow into surviving seedlings. When growing hydrangeas in the southern region, you can prune them lightly in autumn, and when pruning lightly, you can properly trim its remaining flowers and two pairs of leaves under the flowers, which can encourage it to grow more branches.

How to grow hydrangeas

Hydrangeas only bloom once a year, and their flowering period is approximately between June and August each year. However, many people still believe that hydrangeas can bloom multiple times. The reason for the illusion of multiple blooms is that the old branches bloom first.

New branches will begin to bloom after the flowers of hydrangeas fade. At the same time, the temperature should be controlled when the hydrangeas are blooming, and the temperature should be controlled to about 20℃ as much as possible. Be careful not to fertilize during the flowering period.

1. Lighting

After pruning the hydrangea, you only need to block the western sun for a while, and place the hydrangea in a sunny place at other times. This will be conducive to the growth of hydrangeas and the growth of new branches.

2. Watering

After the hydrangea's flowering period, you should still maintain the principle of watering when the soil is dry and watering when the soil is wet. Carefully observe whether the hydrangea leaves are drooping, and then calculate the time to water before the leaves droop.

3. Fertilization

Hydrangeas consume a lot of nutrients when they bloom, so after the flowers fade, apply fertilizer on the surface of the soil. Stop fertilizing when the temperature drops and the hydrangeas shed their leaves.
