Time and method of cutting of Kalanchoe

Cutting time of Kalanchoe

The time for cuttings of Kalanchoe can be chosen in mid-June in summer or late September in autumn. The climate is warm during these two periods, which is suitable for the growth of Kalanchoe. It can increase the survival rate of cuttings and promote rooting. It is not recommended to choose winter because the climate is too cold and the survival rate of cuttings is low. Even if they survive and take root, it will be slow.

Cutting method of Kalanchoe

1. Selection of cuttings

For Kalanchoe, you need to choose high-quality cuttings with a high survival rate and fast rooting speed. Select thick branches with good growth and no diseases or insect pests from the mother plant as cuttings. The length should be about 9 cm. Keep 2 to 3 leaves on the top and cut off the rest of the leaves. After applying carbendazim to the cut, place it in a ventilated place to dry until the cut shrinks.

2. Matrix Preparation

The substrate for Kalanchoe cuttings needs to have good drainage, be loose, breathable and fertile. The substrate can be made by mixing river sand, leaf mold and garden soil. Before putting it into the container, expose it to the sun for 1 to 2 days to disinfect and sterilize it.

3. Take cuttings

Before cuttings, rooting powder can be applied to the base of the cuttings to facilitate rooting. It is best to keep the substrate temperature at around 18°C during cuttings. Insert the treated cuttings 3 to 4 cm into the substrate, compact the surrounding substrate with your hands, and water it thoroughly to complete the cuttings.

Maintenance of Kalanchoe after cutting

After the Kalanchoe cuttings are completed, place them in a semi-shaded, well-ventilated and warm environment for maintenance. Water them when the surface of the substrate is slightly dry. Stop watering when the water seeps out from the bottom of the container. Keep the substrate moist. It will take root after half a month, and can be transplanted into pots when the root system of the cuttings is relatively sound.
