How to propagate tulips: sowing and dividing bulbs

How to reproduce tulips

There are two main ways to propagate tulips, namely seed propagation and bulb propagation. Seed propagation is usually carried out in autumn, when the climate is more suitable, which can improve its survival rate. Bulb propagation is usually carried out in June, and attention should be paid to cold protection during propagation.

Common methods of propagating tulips

1. Tulip sowing propagation

Tulips are bulbous plants. After flowering, the bulbs need to be taken out and dried, then stored in a low-temperature environment and sown in autumn from September to October. The time should not be too early or too late, otherwise it will affect its rooting.

When tulips are propagated by sowing, in order to allow the bulbs to grow better, loose and fertile soil is needed. Generally, garden soil or leaf mold is used, and then an appropriate amount of sand is added to increase drainage. A hole can be dug on the surface of the soil for sowing.

2. Propagation of tulip bulbs

Tulip bulb division is usually carried out in June every year. At this time, the plant has finished flowering and the above-ground parts have gradually withered. The bulbs have entered a dormant state, which is more suitable for separating the side bulbs. The bulbs need to be taken out of the soil and the small bulbs on both sides separated.

After separating the tulip bulbs, you can plant the separated small bulbs in the soil. If the pot used is larger, you can bury more, but there must be an appropriate distance. After burying, they need to be watered appropriately and protected from the cold.
