Time and method of cuttings of elm

Elm cutting time

Elm cuttings are usually taken in spring or autumn. In autumn, it starts from leaf fall, which is from September to October. In spring, it should be taken before new buds sprout, which is from March to April. This way, the survival rate is higher.

Elm cutting method

1. Cutting medium

Elm trees like loose, breathable, well-drained soil. Choose leaf mold, garden soil, and peat ash, mix them evenly in a ratio of 6:2:2, and use it as the substrate for cuttings. You can expose them to the sun for disinfection before use.

2. Branch processing

Choose sturdy, disease-free semi-lignified or lignified branches, cut 10-18 cm with sharp scissors, remove the leaves at the base, retain 1-2 tender leaves at the top, cut the bottom into an oblique cut, and make the top into a round flat cut. Soak them in rooting water for 15-20 minutes and dry them.

3. Take cuttings

Insert the branches of the elm tree into the soil. Usually the row spacing is kept at about 30 cm and the plant spacing is 20 cm. The cuttings can be slightly exposed above the ground. After cuttings, cover the soil and compact it, and water it thoroughly.

Maintenance of elm cuttings

After the elm cuttings, you can spray a proper amount of water to keep it moist, place it in a cool, well-ventilated environment for maintenance, avoid direct sunlight, control the ambient temperature at 18℃-25℃, and wait 15-25 days for it to take root and survive.
