How to prune osmanthus and the time and method of pruning

Osmanthus pruning time

If you want to do minor pruning of osmanthus, you can do it all year round. If you want to do major pruning, it is best to do it during the dormant period, which is from January to February. Timely pruning is conducive to wintering and can also promote growth and bloom more flowers.

Osmanthus pruning method

1. Pruning during the seedling stage

When the height of the osmanthus tree is about 1.5 meters, the top branches need to be cut off, and the side branches and branches near the bottom of the main trunk also need to be cut off. The remaining branches also need to be shortened so that the overall height is maintained at about 1 meter.

2. Pruning during the growing season

Osmanthus trees also need to be pruned during their growing period, mainly to prune and thin out the densely growing branches on the main branches. Each branch on the tree should be cut off when it grows to a height of about 40 cm to control the growth height and encourage more branching.

3. Pruning during flowering period

When the osmanthus tree enters the flowering period, the dense, overlapping and weak branches should be pruned. This will give the branches more space to grow, the flowers will absorb sufficient light, and the appreciation value of the osmanthus tree will be improved.

4. Spring pruning

Osmanthus trees may suffer frostbite in winter, so they need to be pruned before spring to remove all branches that have been damaged by frost. In order to avoid excessive wounds, the scissors can be kept at 45 degrees during pruning. After pruning is completed, the climate will gradually warm up and new branches will grow.
