How to prune the branches and leaves of Schefflera chinensis

Schefflera pruning time

Schefflera can be pruned in all seasons, depending on its growth conditions. The best time to prune is in winter, when the plant has entered a dormant or semi-dormant state. Although it has basically stopped growing, it can avoid the risk of cuts and the invasion of pests and diseases.

The Schefflera vine is generally not pruned during its growth period, which is not conducive to shaping it, and it is also inconvenient to care for it after pruning. Timely pruning can enhance its aesthetics, avoid nutrient consumption, and promote its subsequent growth.

How to prune Schefflera

1. When pruning the Schefflera vine, it is mainly to cut off its weak branches and diseased and insect-infested branches. At the same time, the overcrowded branches and leaves should be thinned out appropriately to increase internal ventilation and light transmission, reduce the risk of bacterial growth, and prevent it from getting sick. The pruning should be clean and neat, and the cut ends should be neat. The cut branches can also be used for cuttings.

2. The purpose of pruning the Schefflera vine is to help it grow on the one hand and to give it a shape on the other. Therefore, you should pay attention to the pruning position to avoid the different densities of new branches growing out of the plant, which will affect its appearance. At the same time, some branches that are too long should be shortened appropriately to make their branches look more consistent in length.

3. During the home cultivation of Schefflera chinensis, leaves will fall off. All the leaves at the top will fall off, and only a few leaves will remain at the bottom. At this time, you can prune it from the middle position to allow it to sprout new branches. Pruning is usually carried out in summer.

4. When the young plants of Schefflera are still not fully formed, it is most suitable to carry out shaping pruning. Just cut off the dense, unevenly growing, and too long branches in time. For old plants that have grown for 4-5 years, with thick branches and a larger plant shape, they need to be heavily pruned.
