How to propagate cypress by cuttings and sowing

Cypress reproduction method

The common methods of propagation of cypress are cuttings and sowing, which are usually carried out in spring and autumn, specifically in March and April in spring and around October in autumn. As long as the ambient temperature is around 20 degrees, cuttings or sowing can be carried out.

Common propagation methods of cypress

1. Cypress cutting propagation

Cypress trees can be propagated by cuttings in spring and autumn. Select thick and healthy branches from well-growing plants, with a length of 10-15 cm. Keep more than 3 nodes on each branch to promote later growth. Remove the leaves on the lower part of the branches to prevent them from rotting when inserted into the soil.

Prepare a loose and fertile substrate, insert the branches obliquely into the substrate, adjust the surrounding temperature, and keep it at 20-30 degrees Celsius. Too high or too low temperature will affect rooting. If the temperature is too low, rooting will be difficult. If the temperature is too high, it will be easy to be infected by bacteria. Pay attention to maintenance after cuttings and provide appropriate shade.

2. Cypress seed propagation

Cypress seeds can be stored for 1-2 years. They are usually harvested in November, dried and stored. In spring, the seeds are soaked in warm water of 50-55 degrees for about 1 hour and placed in a warm place to germinate. After the seeds turn white, they can be sown or broadcast. The soil should be leveled and watered in advance. When the topsoil is slightly dry, sow the seeds and then cover them with soil. They can also be sown in autumn and the seedlings will emerge in the spring of the following year.
