How to propagate elderberry

How to propagate elderberry

one. Seed propagation

1. This plant usually bears fruit in autumn. We can wait until its fruits are ripe and have cracked before collecting them. Be careful to collect it when it has cracked but not fallen off. After collecting, rub the fruit with both hands, and the seeds will be rubbed out. Next, we can remove the impurities on the seed surface and use water to remove useless substances on the outside of the seeds.

2. Then you can prepare the seedbed for cultivating seedlings. Generally, you choose to sow by row sowing, so you need to dig trenches, and then sow the seeds. After sowing, cover the surface of the seeds with a layer of soil 1 to 1.5 cm thick.

3. This plant likes to germinate in places with relatively low temperatures, so it is best to control the temperature at 7.6-12.4 degrees.

4. During the germination period, it is necessary to give it sufficient light. If all these conditions are met, it will sprout after about 3 or 4 days. The probability of this type of seeds sprouting is about 72%. If handled properly, most seeds can germinate.

5. During its growing period, we must pay attention to the moisture retention of the soil and regularly remove the surrounding weeds so that the plant can fully absorb the nutrients it needs.

two. Cutting propagation

1. If you don't like seed propagation, we can also use cuttings, usually in February, which is a season when germination is easier. We need to select healthy and disease-free branches from strong plants. These branches can be cut into strips of 20 to 25 cm in length. It should be noted that these branches must have more than 3 growth nodes.

2. Then we can dig a 3-meter-wide seedbed and dig horizontal trenches with a spacing of 26 cm and a depth of 16 to 20 cm. We can cut 15 to 20 branches on a horizontal groove, and the top node must be exposed above the ground.

3. Then you can fill these ditches with soil.
